Come learn at the farm!

Educational events at the farm are geared to smaller groups in an intimate atmosphere.
Retreats and workshops take place at Sassafras Farm– home of Chickens in the Road–located in the beautiful Appalachian foothills of Roane County, West Virginia.

Private groups of friends and families are welcome, including birthday and other special event parties. See info below for family reunions, too! Below, find examples of planned events–OR let us customize an event just for you! Email Suzanne at [email protected] to get started.

Private, personalized workshop retreat days are available for groups from 2 to 40 attendees. (All ages are welcome in private retreats, but attendees under 18 must be accompanied by a paid attendee parent/guardian.) Workshops are available in cheesemaking, preserving, candlemaking, soapmaking, and in a variety of baking and cooking topics such as cake pops, cake decorating, breadbaking, homemade ice cream and waffle cones, and more. You can choose from a regularly scheduled workshop (on a private day just for you), or make your own day. The day will be geared to you! (See examples of workshop days here.) As with all retreats at Sassafras Farm, everything’s included–three full home-cooked meals plus snacks, all supplies and instruction, and your take-homes. Your day will last from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The cost for private full-day workshops is $125 per person. Half-day retreats are $75 and include lunch only. Private retreats can take place on any day not already taken by a scheduled event.
